James Burton "J.B." Mauney wasn't just a bull rider—he was a force of nature. Known for his fearless riding style and unmatched determination, Mauney became one of the most electrifying athletes in PBR history. He rode bulls others wouldn't dare attempt, with a grit and tenacity that made him a fan favorite and a legend among his peers.
Mauney burst onto the scene in 2006, quickly establishing himself as a premier talent. His aggressive riding style—sitting far up on the rope and spurring with reckless abandon—was unlike anything the sport had seen. By 2009, he was a consistent title contender, and in 2013, he captured his first World Championship with a dominant season that silenced any doubters.
Mauney's resume includes some of the most memorable rides in PBR history. He was one of the few riders to conquer the legendary bull Bushwacker, recording a 95.25-point ride in 2013. His ability to ride the rankest bulls in the world—Air Time, Asteroid, Pearl Harbor—cemented his legacy as a true champion who never backed down from a challenge.
In 2015, Mauney proved his first title was no fluke, capturing his second World Championship in spectacular fashion. Despite battling injuries throughout his career—broken bones, torn ligaments, and countless stitches—he continued to compete at the highest level, showing the heart of a true warrior.
What set Mauney apart wasn't just his talent—it was his unwavering spirit. He rode through injuries that would sideline most athletes, famously competing with broken ribs, torn groins, and separated shoulders. His famous quote, "I'll ride until the wheels fall off," became the embodiment of his career philosophy.
After a career-ending injury in 2023, Mauney hung up his rope, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire generations. He retired as one of the greatest bull riders of all time, with multiple world titles, countless event wins, and the respect of everyone who witnessed his remarkable career. J.B. Mauney didn't just ride bulls—he conquered them.
"Cowboy up and ride hard."
Forever a Legend • Forever a Champion
Professional Bull Riders (PBR) is the world's premier bull riding organization. Watch live events, highlights, and exclusive content from the toughest sport on dirt.
The Professional Bull Riders was founded in 1992 by 20 visionary cowboys who each contributed $1,000 to create a standalone bull riding organization. These founding members, including legends like Tuff Hedeman, Cody Lambert, and Adriano Moraes, believed bull riding deserved its own spotlight separate from traditional rodeo.
The first PBR World Finals was held in Las Vegas in 1994, establishing what would become an annual tradition. The event crowned the first official PBR World Champion and set the stage for the sport's explosive growth. Prize money that first year totaled around $250,000.
PBR secured its first major television deal with TNN (The Nashville Network), bringing bull riding into millions of American homes. This exposure transformed PBR from a niche sport into mainstream entertainment, attracting new fans and corporate sponsors. By 2000, the PBR was broadcasting to over 100 million households.
In 2007, PBR received a significant investment from a group that included sports marketing veterans, allowing for expanded operations and increased prize money. The World Finals prize pool grew to over $2 million, and the tour expanded to more than 30 events annually across the United States and internationally.
PBR expanded internationally with events in Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Mexico. Brazilian riders, in particular, became dominant forces in the sport, with champions like Silvano Alves winning multiple world titles. The PBR Australia tour became one of the most successful international ventures.
Entertainment giant Endeavor (formerly WME-IMG) acquired PBR, bringing Hollywood-level production values and marketing expertise to the sport. This partnership elevated PBR's media presence and helped secure broadcast deals with CBS and CBS Sports Network, reaching an even wider audience.
PBR launched the PBR Team Series in 2022, introducing a revolutionary team format with franchises in cities across America. This innovation brought a new dimension to the sport, combining individual excellence with team competition. The league features teams like the Austin Gamblers, Nashville Stampede, and Texas Rattlers, owned by sports celebrities and business leaders.
From 20 cowboys pooling $20,000 to a global phenomenon worth hundreds of millions, PBR has transformed bull riding from a rodeo event into a standalone professional sport. Today, the PBR features the world's top 35 bull riders competing for millions in prize money, with events broadcast to over 500 million homes in 50+ countries. The sport honors the Western heritage while embracing modern sports entertainment, creating the "toughest sport on dirt."
